Along with many other things in your apartment you have to be mindful of ensuring that these are clean. Your rental can be fairly easy to maintain if you know how to do it. Here is a how-to on cleaning your air vents.

Why Do You Need to Clean Them?

It can be easy to forget that you have to clean your vents because you might not be staring up at your ceiling on a regular basis. When you see that you have air vents that are dirty, it's important to take the time to clean them. It not only prevents clean air from entering and circulating in your apartment, but it can also be a fire hazard.

Where Do I Find the Vents?

You're going to find vents in your bathroom, in every room that is connected to your HVAC system, and a wall vent where your filter is stored. If you don’t know where all your vents are, now is a good time to go from room to room and take an inventory.

How Do I Clean Them?

It may seem like a difficult task to clean your rental air vents but if you clean them regularly, it can become an easy task that can take less than 5 minutes per vent to clean.

What You Will Need:

  • Ruler
  • Cleaner (409, Simple Green or your favorite gentle spray)
  • Cloth rag
  • Duster
  • Trash bag
  • Scissors
  • Step stool
  1. Take the trash bag and the scissors to cut the bottom of the bag open. Take your new make-shift tarp and set it on the floor under the air vent. This isn’t a requirement but it will help with the clean-up afterwards. If you don’t want to waste a trash bag, you can always vacuum the floors when you're done cleaning the vents.

  2. Set your step stool under the air vent that you wish to clean (unless you're starting with the vent that is found on the wall and closer to the floor). Make sure that you feel stable when you step on the step stool. For step stool safety tips, click here.

  3. Take your duster and dust the air ducts to nock of as much loose dust or dirt as you can.

  4. Take your ruler and wrap it in a cloth rag. Take your cleaning spray and spray it on the rag.

  5. Then take your ruler/rag and begin cleaning the outside of the air vents and along the openings. You can easily get in those hard to reach places while still being able to apply the right amount of pressure to get the air vents clean.

  6. Once you're done, use the rag to wipe down excess cleaning spray or dust.

  7. Repeat for each air vent.
