Summer and hot weather is here! Because you are living in Chico, you have different options to help you stay cool. But when there is water present, there is also the need to go over a few tips to help keep everybody safe. So before you put on your bathing suit and grab your towel, check out these tips on pool, river and creek safety!
Pool/Jacuzzi
Many of our Chico apartments have pools and Jacuzzis. Which is great in the Chico heat that inevitably reaches temperatures in the three digits. But with these great amenities come great responsibility. We want all of our residents (and their guests) to be safe while they are cooling down and enjoying our beautiful pools. Here are a few of our pool rules to help keep you safe:
- Pool hours vary per apartment complex.
- Only two guests allowed per apartments with resident(s) present.
- No alcohol is allowed at any time. (It might be 5 o’clock somewhere but it’s not drinking time when you go to enjoy your pool area.)
- Please, no suntan lotion or oils in the Jacuzzi or swimming pool area.
- No smoking in the pool area. Be courteous of the people around you and smoke in a different area that permits it.

Sacramento River
With Chico being so close to the Sacramento River, we find it important to cover river safety as well. Tubing, boating and fishing are popular activities that Chicoans do in the Sac River. But unfortunately when safety isn’t a priority, injury or death can occur. We don’t want to cause any alarm but this river has strong currents and eddies that we want you to be prepared for. Here are a few safety tips to stay safe in a river:
- Wear a well-fitted life vest
- Never go on the river alone
- Tell someone who isn’t going with you where you are planning to go and when you are returning

Big Chico Creek
Having the beautiful Bidwell Park in Chico is always a perk especially during the summer time. Big Chico Creek creeps along the picnic benches and trails just waiting for you to jump in and enjoy the cooler water. This creek can be deceiving though. There are many places throughout the creek that have fast rapids and large boulders that can be dangerous.
Please keep your children safe and put a fitted life vest on them when in the water. It is common for dogs to play in the creek and people aren’t aware of the random currents.

Now that you have a few water safety tips it is time for you to go outside and enjoy the weather. For more apartment living tips, check out our Hignell Rentals blog.
