How to Unpack From a Move to Apartment in Chico or Redding California

Written by Hignell Rentals Team | August 19, 2020

Now that all of your boxes are in your new apartment in Chico or Redding California, it's time for the most fun part, unpacking. Oh joy!

The key to any unpacking endeavor is to get started and get it over with. You don’t have to be an organizing guru to make unpacking a seamless process. Follow these steps and you will be done in no time!

Step 1: Start with the Necessities

Always unpack your toilet paper, hand soap, dish soap and towels for both the bathroom and the kitchen first. You need to be able to wash any dirty dishes as you are unpacking and of course take care of business when nature calls.

Step 2: Move Boxes and Bags to the Rooms Where They Belong

Put kitchen boxes in the kitchen, bathroom boxes in the bathroom…you get the drift. You will save more time by moving all of the boxes in their respective places while you are in a groove. This can also help you keep your sanity and give the illusion of order. You'll also know for sure when a room is fully unpacked, giving you that much needed sense of accomplishment.

Step 3: Unpack One Room at a Time

Choose which room is the most important to get done first. If it is near the end of the night, your priority might be your bedroom and bathroom. Nobody wants to worry about making the bed at the end of a long day of moving. But, if you have the majority of the day left to unpack then you might want to work on the kitchen to have access to glasses, plates and most importantly food!

Step 4: Organize and Purge While You're Unpacking

Create systems to get yourself in a clean and organized state of mind right when you get into the apartment. If you realized that you have 25 glasses and you live by yourself and don’t have that many people over all the time, it might be time to get rid of a few. You can also decide if the clothes you kept are really worth keeping as you find them a place to live. It's always good to have a little extra cabinet or closet space when you move into your new apartment in Chico or Redding California because you will inevitably get house warming gifts or splurge a little on clothes when the new season hits.

Step 5: Make a List of Items You Want/Need to Buy

Whether it be a shelf for the bathroom, a plant for the living room, or command strips for picture hanging, put all of the items that you want or need on a list. Hold off on actually purchasing the items until you're almost all unpacked. This will help you with figuring out if you actually need it or if it was hiding in a box marked something else. It'll also help keep the clutter of boxes down to a minimum.

Step 6: Don’t be Afraid to Ask for Help

Everyone knows that unpacking goes by faster with a little help. Any of your friends or family good with technology or fancy themselves an organizational wizard? There will always be computers, cable, and other electronics that need hooking up that could be done by someone else while you unpack your bedroom. Same goes with unpacking your kitchen, your friend can help organize it while you help direct where the furniture goes. All it takes is a little direction and your friends and family will have you moved and unpacked in no time!

Post-it® notes are a great way to help identify where things need to go without you having to be there assisting everybody all the time. Place sticky notes in the cabinets to show people where you want certain glassware or on walls to show where you want your TV.

Doing these steps will help make the unpacking process in your beautiful new apartment in Chico or Redding California a wonderful one. Just be patient, think ahead and don’t be afraid to turn on some music and turn it into an unpacking party!
