How to Transition Your Dog to a New Apartment

Written by Hignell Rentals Team | May 29, 2019

Moving into a new apartment can be a difficult transition for your pets, but you can set your dog up for success. Here are a few tips for you to implement in your new apartment in Chico or Redding that will potentially decrease anxiety and stress with your pet.

Re-Establish a New Norm/Schedule

Dogs are known for their need to have a schedule and routine to help keep them calm and less stressed. When you move to your new apartment, you need to start a new schedule for your dog that includes: feeding, going to the bathroom, exercise and playtime. This will help your dog feel safe and secure while getting use to their new home.

Keep Them Entertained

It's important for you to ensure that your dog doesn’t get bored while they're inside your apartment. Doing this will help keep them from barking and from chewing on your furniture. Get toys that challenge your dogs. Here are few examples:

Re-Potty Train

Your dog needs to know when to expect you'll be taking them for a walk to use the restroom and get exercise. Of course taking them for surprise additional walks in a day is great but there has to be consistency. Adult dogs need to be able to relieve themselves 3 to 5 times a day. If you're at work and can only take them for a walk once before work and again after work, then it's important for you to have a doggy pad inside your apartment and train them to use it.

Most importantly, remember to pay special attention to your dog and implement the tips above. Many apartments in Chico and Redding will accept pets and offer just what you need for you and your dog.
