Rental Living Tips: How to Safely Dispose of Your Christmas Tree

Written by Hignell Rentals Team | December 29, 2020
While the excitement for 2020 being over is high, the fact that Christmas is officially over is a little sad.

One of the best parts of the Christmas season is going to pick out your Christmas tree and spending time decorating it with all the family ornaments, colorful lights, or all the garland you can place on it. Rental living may mean you have to become a little more creative when it comes to getting your tree inside your rental, but it adds to the fun, right? PIVOT!

The worst part about the Christmas season ending is having to undo all the hard work you did in the first place. You have to take all of your family ornaments and lights off the tree, figure out how they all fit into that one box that goes into the storage closet, and finally, dispose of your tree.

Chico has two different options for you to choose from when it comes to how you want to dispose of your tree this year, even in the midst of a global pandemic. Hint: all of the options deal with recycling your tree not throwing away your tree.

Option #1: Support the Scouts

Make apartment living easier and let the Boy Scouts take it away for you! Every year the Boy Scouts offer to recycle your Christmas tree for you at little to no cost.

They would love your donation in return for picking up your tree but do not require it. If you feel like donating they suggest anywhere from $10-$35 dollars, unless you feel like really blessing them this year with more than the suggested amount. Your donation goes towards helping pay for all the camping costs they experience throughout the year.

This year the trees will be given to the Department of Water Resources so that they can set them in places they can serve as fish habitats. Help them out and click here to reserve your pick-up time! When donating your tree, make sure all ornaments and other decorations have been taken off. Pick-up is only available in the Chico area and they are not accepting flocked trees or wreaths.

Option #2: Green Waste Service

Are you a resident who subscribes to the Waste Management’s green waste service? If you are then you qualify for curbside pickup. The only thing you have to do is make sure that your tree is cut into 3-foot-length sections and placed into your green waste container.

Like with the Boy Scouts option above make sure that you have taken off all your ornaments and decorations - they cannot be recycled!

From all of us at Hignell Rentals, we ask you to please recycle your tree with one of the two options above and to not just throw it in the dumpster or leave it on the side of the road. Keep our lovely City of Chico a clean, safe, and well taken care of place that we can be happy to call home.

Part of putting your rental back in order is cleaning up all the dirt and pine needles that's leftover. For other ways you can give your rental a good clean after all your Christmas decorations are stored away download our Seasonal Deep Cleaning Checklist!
