How to Keep Your Rental Clean During the Rainy Season

Written by Hignell Rentals Team | March 11, 2021

Easiest way to keep your rental clean during the rainy days? Don’t leave it! Yet that’s unrealistic advice especially if you work in an office or you're low on groceries.

Therefore, when you decide to venture outside your rental on a rainy day how can you keep it clean upon your return when you aren’t clean? Here are six simple ways you can keep all the dirt and extra water outside, where they belong!

#1 Have a Drop Zone

This is a designated spot near the door that you can place all your outside things in or on. Coat racks are a great way to collect wet jackets or bags, but make sure you place an absorbent mat underneath it to collect all the runoff water!

#2 Shoes Off

Like your coat rack, you need a place to put your dirty and wet shoes when you come through the door. Having a good entryway rug where you can take your shoes off will do wonders to protect your rental carpet! Then place them on a shoe tray that will allow you to keep all the excess water and mud from being transferred onto your floor.

#3 Get Creative

Don’t have a lot of room in the entry way to place a coat rack or a shoe tray? Get creative on the different places within your rental you can use to let your items and shoes dry! Your bathtub is a great place to set your dripping umbrellas or to hang your coats.

Have a covered patio, backyard, or balcony? Maybe you can place your wet shoes right outside to dry out before pulling them inside and placing them on your shoe rack.

#4 Invest in Diffusers

Rainy days are great, but after several days of rain it can have your rental beginning to gather that damp smell. Opening the windows to air it out when it’s cold and windy doesn’t sound appealing so grab a diffuser and your favorite smelling essential oils to help get rid of the damp smell all while staying warm inside.

#5 Clean Floors with Disinfectant

The rainy season has its ups and downs. One of the downs is that bacteria and germs thrive in damp and moist environments. The best way to keep them from growing and spreading is to disinfect your floors on a weekly basis. Focus on your entry ways and all the places that allow access to the outside along with your kitchen and bathroom floors. Here’s a list of the best floor disinfectants and which flooring type they are best for.

#6 Wait till the End of the Day

Whether you have a family or live alone, it’s recommended that you wait till the end of the day to begin cleaning. This will ensure that there are no more trips outside and everyone is in for the night.

It’s never fun when you begin cleaning only to turn around and realize that someone came in from outside or they dropped their shoes in the spot you just cleaned. It also means that when cleaning the floors, you are fairly sure no one else will be walking on them until they are good and dry.
