10 Ways to Rescue a Rental Property Bathroom

Written by Hignell Rentals Team | November 9, 2021

The throne room in your rental may not exactly be fit for a king, but it’s one of the most visited places in your home, so you want it to at least feel as clean and organized as possible. Bathrooms in rental properties are usually neutral colors and don’t always offer extra storage space. However, you can make it feel and look luxurious by making just a few small yet easy changes.

Your goal may not be to have a bathroom that's literally "fit for a king", but if you can make your bathroom feel just a little more like a luxury spa, it's worth it!

1.  Splurge on the good towels

This is something that you will use every day. Purchase some nice, soft towels that will last instead of thin scratchy ones you dread drying off with each day. Make sure they match too – it will make the space feel more opulent.

2.  Hide the floor

While you’re buying some new towels, add a couple of rugs to your cart to hide the floor in your Chico or Redding rental property if it’s old, outdated, or just not a color you want to have to work with. If your bathroom floor is tile this will also help keep your feet warmer in the winter.

3.  Wine rack towel holder

When you roll your towels they fit perfectly in a wine rack, and it looks cool too! You can use either a free standing or hanging rack.

4.  Hang a large mirror

If you have the wall space in your bathroom, hanging a large mirror can give the optical illusion of making the bathroom look bigger than it really is by reflecting more space.

5.  Add a book shelf above the door

This can provide extra storage for the items you don’t use as often, such as extra towels, cleaning supplies, or specialty pampering items. Put them in a nice storage bin so it doesn’t look cluttered.

6.  Create a focal point

What is the first thing you see when you walk into your bathroom? If it’s a wall add a coordinating piece of wall art. If it’s the shower curtain, choose a fun pattern that you can decorate around.

7.  Strategically add extra counter space

There are some brilliant ways to do this and think outside the box. Create vertical space with stacking plates, hang spice racks on the wall or inside your cabinets for the everyday items you use, and even hang mason jars to store things like cotton balls and Q-tips.

8.  Line the cabinets

Hopefully your house guests aren’t snooping around your bathroom and opening every cabinet, but by adding shelf liner you’ll create a cleaner and more consistent look and feel inside the drawers and cabinets.

9.  Add some hooks

Find a couple of fun hooks for your wall or use the adhesive kind and stick them on the back of your door for towels, bathrobes, clothing, or bathing accessories.

10. Just a few accessories

Bathrooms in general are small spaces, so you don’t want to overwhelm them with accessories. However, the humid, moist environment is great for bathroom plants and your favorite scented candle will ensure the space always smells nice too.

Keep it spick and span

This is one space in your home you don’t want to just give the impression is clean. You really want it to be, because, well, a messy bathroom is just yucky. Wipe down the counters, scrub the bathtub and toilet weekly, keep the floors mopped, put dirty clothes and towels in the laundry, and stock the toilet paper! It’s just better this way.

Rescuing your rental bathroom doesn’t have to take much time or money. A few small changes will make a big difference to your Chico or Redding rental property, and you’ll feel like you rule the world – or at least your rental space!
